In the journey towards wellness and vitality, age should never be a deterrent. In fact, it should be the catalyst for embracing activities that enhance physical, mental, and emotional well-being. A modality, often overlooked, is Reformer Pilates, especially tailored for individuals aged 60+. This transformative exercise and movement offers a plethora of benefits, ranging from alleviating injuries and aches to fostering social connections and mental clarity.
Addressing Injuries, Aches, and Pains
As we age, our bodies undergo various changes, including decreased flexibility, muscle strength, and joint mobility. This often leads to the onset of injuries, aches, and pains such as shoulder injuries, hip injuries and or knee injuries. Reformer Pilates, with its gentle low impact yet effective approach, serves as a therapeutic tool for addressing these issues. The controlled movements and resistance provided by the reformer machine help in improving flexibility, strengthening muscles, and enhancing joint mobility.
Reformer Pilates is renowned for its low-impact nature, making it particularly suitable for seniors aged 60+ with existing injuries or joint issues. By engaging in regular Reformer Pilates classes, individuals can experience reduced pain, improved posture, and increased range of motion, thereby reclaiming their physical vitality and independence.
Fostering Social Community Connection
One of the notable aspects of Reformer Pilates is its ability to foster a sense of community and connection, vital for overall well-being, especially among seniors aged 60+. Participating in group classes provides an opportunity for individuals to interact, share experiences, and build meaningful relationships with like-minded peers. This sense of camaraderie not only enhances motivation but also combats feelings of loneliness and isolation, common amongst those in our 60+ demographic.
The supportive environment created within a Reformer Pilates class encourages individuals to push their boundaries, celebrate achievements, and embark on their wellness journey together. Whether it’s exchanging fitness tips or simply sharing a laugh, the social aspect of our classes adds a layer of enjoyment and fulfillment to the overall experience.
Cultivating Mental Clarity and Focus
In addition to its physical benefits, Reformer Pilates offers a multitude of advantages for mental well-being, particularly in terms of clarity and focus. The mind-body connection inherent in Pilates encourages individuals to be present in the moment, fostering mindfulness and concentration. As participants focus on executing precise movements and coordinating their breath, they experience a sense of mental clarity and calmness.
Furthermore, regular practice of Reformer Pilates, has been associated with improved cognitive function and reduced stress levels. The rhythmic nature of the exercises, coupled with the emphasis on structural alignment and breathing techniques, helps in alleviating mental tension and promoting relaxation. This not only enhances overall mood but also contributes to a heightened sense of well-being and vitality.
Client journey – Margaret’s story on how regular Reformer Pilates exercise transformed her shoulder injury, mental clarity and overall health & well-being.
Meet Margaret, a testament to the transformative power of Reformer Pilates for our 60+ community. At 75 years young, Margaret has been a dedicated member of our Reformer Pilates community at Major Movement for 2+ years, and her journey is nothing short of inspiring.
Margaret came to Major Movement for Reformer Pilates after sustaining a nasty injury to her rotator cuff (shoulder injury). After trying various therapies and exercise rehab programs, nothing seemed to help her resolve her pain and lack of shoulder mobility. Margaret’s daughter suggested she try Reformer Pilates for a different outlook and perspective for her strength and rehabilitation.
Margaret’s shares her story of overcoming her shoulder pain:
From the very beginning, I found Pilates to be very helpful and this continued to the point that I regained full shoulder mobility and a complete reduction in pain.
As a 75 year old woman, I was initially skeptical and unsure about joining Pilates, and maybe even a little self-conscious, however after a few sessions, and thanks to Anita’s warm welcome, I found myself enjoying the classes and was not concerned in the slightest.
My strength has improved, my posture is much better and I feel fantastic. For the first time in a long time, I can feel my muscles and can see improvements to my shape overall.
The team at Major Movement have provided me with targeted support from an individual clinical-style environment at the initial stage of my Pilates journey. I then moved into a group-style class environment when I was physically able to progress to the next level..
Specialized attention is built into their group classes to ensure each class is achievable and has different levels of challenges to suit everyone’s wants & needs and abilities.
The challenges set are a bit of fun but provide motivation and a purpose and I was delighted to come 2nd in one of the monthly challenges.
I wasn’t sure what to expect at Major Movement, I didn’t want to make a fool out of myself and be a hindrance to others. What I did get, is a safe space to exercise to get stronger, a place of shared goals and interests and a community of different people who were welcoming, warm, funny and encouraging.
Major Movement is a place that caters for all abilities and ages. It builds not only strength and recovery from injuries but fosters personal improvement, confidence and promotes self-belief in all life facets.
I now attend group classes twice a week and have invited a friend to join me, which we both look forward to every session to continually improve our everyday health & movement.
